Known from thousands of individuals recovered at the La Brea tar pits, Smilodon fatalis is the most completely understood of all saber-toothed cats. The build is bear-like rather than feline: heavy forelimbs, a short tail and the enormous gape needed to clear canines up to 18 centimetres long.

About this piece

Modelled by hand in heat-hardened clay over a wire armature, moulded in silicone and cast in polyurethane resin. Every copy is cleaned, retouched and painted by hand in acrylics, so no two pieces are ever strictly identical.
